Whitlam & Allende
A Tale of Two Coups
Bloodless & Bloody
Australia 1972, corporate riches shot up in a mineral boom.
In the face of rising inflation and stagnating wages,
In the face of endless foreign takeovers of Australian companies,
In the face of systemic injustice, and discrimination,
In the face of the US War on Vietnam,
Australian social movements exploded against US imperialist domination.
Workers, youth, students, women, First Peoples – Whitlam rode their waves of struggle to victory in 1972.
Chile 1970, faced harsher convulsions. 60% lived in deepest poverty, 30% inflation, dire homelessness alongside obscene copper mining wealth.
Social movements rose to seize land, housing and factories.
Student cooperatives grew. City walls were covered in political propaganda.
They propelled Allende into government.
The CIA murdered Allende. They sacked Whitlam.
Today in Australia, and in Chile, economic, political and military crises sharpen. While people are homeless and wages stagnate, hundreds of billions go to corporate profits, wars, military preparations and AUKUS..
What does it mean about radical change today?
